India vs USA – ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026: 1st Innings Match Report

India were restricted to 161 for 9 in 20 overs after a brilliant bowling performance by the USA at the Wankhede Stadium. Despite a late surge led by Suryakumar Yadav, the American bowlers dominated large phases of the innings.

India were put under pressure from the very start.

The opening blow came in the second over. Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck, caught at deep cover off Ali Khan. The early wicket set the tone for a difficult powerplay.

Ishan Kishan tried to counterattack. He struck 20 off 16 balls, including two sixes, but perished attempting a big shot. He was caught by Milind Kumar off Shadley van Schalkwyk.

Tilak Varma looked fluent early. He scored 25 off 16 balls, hitting three fours and one six. However, he mistimed a pull shot and was caught by Monank Patel, again off van Schalkwyk.

India lost wickets in quick succession. Shivam Dube fell for 0, caught at short fine leg. Rinku Singh struggled for timing and scored 6 off 14 balls before being caught off Mohammad Mohsin.

At the end of the powerplay, India were reeling at 46 for 4. The pressure continued in the middle overs.

Hardik Pandya could not stabilize the innings. He scored just 5 off 6 balls before being caught by Saiteja Mukkamalla off Harmeet Singh. India slipped further to 77 for 6 in the 13th over, their lowest six-wicket total against an Associate nation in T20Is.

The recovery began with Axar Patel and Suryakumar Yadav.

Axar played a handy knock of 14 off 11 balls, striking two boundaries. He rotated strike well but fell attempting to accelerate, caught by Mohsin off Harmeet Singh.

From the other end, Suryakumar Yadav delivered a captain’s innings under pressure.

Batting deep, SKY played with control and innovation. He brought up his fifty with a scoop shot and accelerated superbly at the death. He remained unbeaten on 84 off 49 balls, hitting multiple fours and sixes, and guiding India past the 160-run mark.

In the final overs, Arshdeep Singh contributed 4 off 6 balls before being caught. Varun Chakaravarthy was run out for 0 on the final delivery, trying to steal a second run.

India eventually finished on 161/9.

The standout performer for the USA was Shadley van Schalkwyk. He produced a sensational spell, finishing with 4 wickets for 25 runs, the best bowling figures by a USA player in T20 World Cup history.

Harmeet Singh supported well with 2 wickets for 26 runs, while Mohammad Mohsin kept things tight in the middle overs. Although Saurabh Netravalkar went wicketless, his variations forced errors late in the innings.

Overall, it was a disciplined, fearless bowling effort by the USA against the defending champions. While 161 is a competitive total, the match now depends on whether India’s bowlers can defend it on a surface offering grip and uneven bounce.
