Sri Lanka produced a strong all-round performance to defeat Ireland by 24 runs in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 match played on February 8. The win was set up by disciplined bowling and excellent control in the middle and death overs.

Chasing a target of 162, Ireland finished on 137 for 9 in 20 overs. Sri Lanka’s spinners and fast bowlers combined well to stop Ireland from building partnerships when it mattered most.

Ireland began the chase with positive intent. Ross Adair looked aggressive early and played some powerful shots. He scored 34 runs off 23 balls, including five fours and one six. His innings gave Ireland early momentum.

However, the momentum shifted when Wanindu Hasaranga struck. Adair was bowled by a sharp googly in the seventh over. That wicket proved crucial and slowed Ireland’s scoring rate.

Harry Tector then took responsibility in the middle overs. He played a steady innings and tried to anchor the chase. Tector scored 40 runs off 34 balls and was Ireland’s top scorer. He rotated the strike well but struggled to find regular boundaries.

Ireland also received brief support from Lorcan Tucker, who scored 21 off 18 balls, and Curtis Campher, who made 13 off 11 balls. Mark Adair added a quick 10 off 6 balls, while George Dockrell chipped in with 9 off 7 balls.

Despite these contributions, Ireland kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The lack of a long partnership hurt their chances as the required run rate kept climbing.

Sri Lanka’s bowling attack was led brilliantly by their spinners. Wanindu Hasaranga delivered a match-winning spell. He finished with 3 wickets for 25 runs in 4 overs and controlled the game through variation and accuracy.

Maheesh Theekshana provided excellent support. He also picked up 3 wickets, conceding just 23 runs in his 4 overs. His early breakthrough and double strike in the 16th over pushed Ireland on the back foot.

Dunith Wellalage bowled economically and took 1 wicket for 28 runs, applying pressure during the middle phase of the innings.

In the death overs, Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers closed the game efficiently. Dushmantha Chameera took 1 wicket and used his slower deliveries well.

The final blow was delivered by Matheesha Pathirana. He bowled Matthew Humphreys with a full, fast delivery clocked at 150 kph, the fastest ball of the match. The wicket ended Ireland’s hopes.

Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka had posted 161 for 8 in 20 overs, which proved to be a competitive total on the surface.

The win gives Sri Lanka valuable momentum in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Their bowling unit showed depth, control, and consistency. Ireland, despite a promising start, will look to improve their finishing in the upcoming matches.
