Dane Piedt's 5/7 enabled Knights to defend 126/6 and beat Mpumalanga Rhinos, bowled out for 92, by 34 runs at Mangaung Oval in the CSA T20 Challenge 2026.
Knights build steadily before losing momentum
Knights chose to bat and reached the second half of their innings without losing a wicket. Jacques Snyman made 45 from 47 balls, providing the innings' main contribution, while Jonathan Bird scored 22 from 24. Their opening partnership reached 66 before Bird was caught by Muhammed Mayet off Tetelo Maphaka at 10.2 overs.
Maphaka removed Snyman through the same catching combination at 12.6, leaving Knights 79/2, and finished with 2/20 from four overs. Those dismissals broke the opening platform, and Smangaliso Nhlebela prevented the middle order from rebuilding it. He bowled Wian Ruthven and had Gihahn Cloete caught by Jon Henry Hinrichsen, reducing Knights to 98/4 by the end of the 16th over. His four overs cost just 16 runs for those two wickets.
Jon Henry Hinrichsen then dismissed Lesego Senokwane for 18 from 17 balls and bowled Emmanuel Motswiri, completing figures of 2/18. Knights were 110/6 at 18.2 overs, with their early stability having given way to regular losses.
Seth Flerdermaus supplied an important late contribution, finishing unbeaten on 20 from 15 balls. His unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 16 with Tiaan van Vuuren, who made 5 not out from 3 balls, ensured Knights used their full allocation without another wicket falling. It left the bowlers a modest total to protect.
Piedt breaks the chase, van Vuuren finishes it
Van Vuuren made the first breakthrough, bowling Yassar Cook for 8 at 2.3 overs. Ruben du Toit and Mayet then added 33 for the second wicket, giving the Rhinos a useful base before Piedt intervened.
Du Toit had struck four boundaries in his 28 from 21 balls when Piedt trapped him lbw at 6.3. Mayet, who made 12, was bowled at the end of the same over, leaving the chase at 50/3. Piedt next bowled Garnett Tarr for 3 at 8.5, removing another batter before a substantial partnership could develop.
Benjamin van Niekerk contributed 14 from 17 balls before Mbongiseni Mhlanga dismissed him lbw at 11.6, with the score 73/5. Bryn Brokensha remained, but his 14 occupied 28 deliveries, and Nhlebela's run-out left the Rhinos 86/6 in the 16th over.
Piedt then ended Brokensha's resistance, with Senokwane taking the catch at 16.5. He trapped Thabile Hlatuka lbw next ball, completing consecutive-delivery strikes that left the Rhinos 89/8. His four-over spell included a maiden: wickets and scoring restraint had proved equally important to the defence.
Van Vuuren completed the dismissal of the tail in the following over. Maphaka was caught by Ruthven before Themba Maupa was bowled from the final delivery, ending the innings after 18 overs. Van Vuuren finished with 3/16, providing the decisive support to Piedt.
