Western Province beat KwaZulu-Natal Inland by five wickets under the D/L method at City Oval, finishing on 117/5 in 12 overs after Inland had made 164/3 in 17. Oliver Whitehead supplied the late hitting that settled the shortened chase in the CSA T20 Challenge 2026.

Lees and Zuma build Inland's platform

After Western Province chose to bowl, Jack Lees provided the attacking edge in a 122-run opening partnership with Ntando Zuma. Lees made 73 from 39 balls, striking 3 fours and 6 sixes, while Zuma gave Inland the continuity to build through almost the entire innings without a wicket falling.

Josh Breed finally separated the openers at 12.3, when Lees was caught by Kyle Simmonds. The breakthrough did not immediately interrupt Inland's progress: Zuma and Chad Laycock added 42 for the second wicket, with Laycock contributing 12 from 11 balls.

Breed then closed the innings with wickets from consecutive deliveries. Laycock was caught by Valentine Kitime at 16.5, before Michael Erlank was lbw without scoring from the next ball. Breed finished with 3/44 from 4 overs, taking every wicket to fall but also conceding heavily.

Zuma remained unbeaten on 69 from 51 balls, with 6 fours and 2 sixes. His contribution ensured that Inland's innings retained its substance after Lees departed, although Province had useful spells elsewhere: Whitehead conceded only 12 from 3 overs and Mihlali Mpongwana returned 0/14 from 2. Their control helped offset the punishment taken by Simmonds, whose 4 overs cost 45.

Whitehead finishes a chase interrupted by run-outs

The revised target gave Province 12 overs to score 116, and Jiveshan Pillay and Kashief Joseph established a strong base with an opening stand of 66. Joseph struck 5 fours and a six in his 32 from 18 balls before Laycock had him caught by Malcolm Nofal from the last ball of the sixth over.

Pillay continued to lead the pursuit, making 43 from 27 balls with 7 fours. His dismissal, caught and bowled by Liyema Waqu at 83/2 in the ninth over, was followed by a more disruptive passage for Province.

Edward Moore was run out for 6, with Zuma the fielder, and Mpongwana followed for 2 after a run-out involving Bamanye Xenxe. Those dismissals left Province 88/4 at the end of the tenth over. Xenxe also conceded just 2 runs from his only over, adding to Inland's efforts to contain the chase.

Daniel Smith and Simmonds added 17 before Laycock bowled Smith for 12 from 10 balls at 11.3, leaving Province 105/5. Laycock finished with 2/34 from 3 overs, but Inland could not complete the defence.

Whitehead answered with an unbeaten 12 from 3 balls, including a four and a six. With Simmonds finishing on 3 not out alongside him, Province passed the revised target from the final delivery.
