Abhishek Sharma’s 21 from 10 balls gave India early momentum, but Roston Chase removed the opener and Akeal Hosein dismissed Sanju Samson for 11.
Instead, Shreyas Iyer supplied the acceleration and Kishan provided continuity. Kishan’s unbeaten 37 from 27 balls ensured that West Indies could not expose the rest of India’s batting order, while Iyer increasingly dictated the pace.
The decisive burst came in the 14th over, bowled by Matthew Forde, which cost 24 runs. Iyer struck three sixes and a four in that over, bringing the finish within reach. He completed his first T20I hundred from 42 balls and ended with 10 fours and six sixes.
Those boundaries accounted for 76 of his 102 runs. The innings combined a substantial share of the chase with a scoring rate that left West Indies little time to recover. By the end, more than five overs of India’s allocation remained unused.
The bowling performance had created that opportunity. After India chose to field, West Indies lost Kamil Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell to slip to 44/3. Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford then added 63, rebuilding an innings that briefly looked capable of setting India a more demanding target.
Hope made 52 from 37 balls, but his dismissal to Naman Dhir broke the recovery. From 107/3, West Indies slid to 135/8: five wickets for 28 runs, leaving Rutherford to repair the damage with the lower order.
Dhir also dismissed Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer, finishing with 3/31 from four overs. Axar Patel returned 2/26 and Kuldeep Yadav 2/33. Between them, the three spinners took seven wickets, repeatedly preventing West Indies from building on their partnerships.
Rutherford’s 56 from 34 balls and a ninth-wicket stand of 36 with Hosein lifted the visitors to 171.
For India, the result brought two clear gains: a match-winning innings from their captain and a productive debut spell from Dhir. West Indies had chances in both innings, but the contrast was in what followed the setbacks. Their recovery gave way to another cluster of wickets; India’s continued uninterrupted to the finish.
The second T20I is scheduled for October 9 at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, starting at 7:00 PM IST. Follow the remaining fixtures and results on CricCatch’s West Indies tour of India 2026 page.
