Ben Duckett's 167 gave England a sustained presence against Sri Lanka at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The match's highest individual score mattered not simply for its size: Duckett was the common presence in the two partnerships that allowed England to build without an early repair job or a prolonged interruption after their first wicket.
Two partnerships, one constant
His 132-ball innings contained 24 fours and no sixes, with a strike rate of 126.5. Repeated boundary scoring, rather than six-hitting, accompanied his long occupation of the crease. He supplied 43% of England's 386/5, the central contribution on a scorecard that also showed useful returns throughout the batting order.
Duckett was eventually caught by Asitha Fernando off Eshan Malinga at 301/3, at 41.4 overs. By then, his contribution had covered both the establishment of the innings and its development through successive changes of partner. England's later batters had a substantial score to extend rather than an innings to reconstruct.
Sri Lanka's decision to bowl had given Duckett and Tom Banton responsibility for setting that platform. Their 163-run opening partnership was the highest stand of the match and accounted for 42% of England's total. It kept the innings intact until Dasun Shanaka bowled Banton at 24.6 overs.
Banton's contribution was substantial in its own right: 74 from 75 deliveries, including eight fours and two sixes. Duckett therefore had an opening partner who added significant runs himself, rather than merely occupying the other end. The stand gave England both a large opening return and wickets available for the rest of the innings.
The handover to Harry Brook preserved that productive partnership pattern. Brook made 44 from 34 balls, striking three fours and two sixes, while the second-wicket pair added 107. Their stand supplied 28% of the team total, ensuring that the opening breakthrough did not leave Duckett carrying the scoring alone.
Asitha ended that partnership with a return catch at 270/2, at 37.3 overs. Duckett then shared another 31 with Will Jacks before his own dismissal. His innings thus connected the opening stand, Brook's contribution and the start of England's later batting, rather than belonging to only one productive passage.
Jacks made 30 from 21 balls, while Jordan Cox contributed 43 from 27 and Sam Curran finished unbeaten on 21 from 12. Those contributions extended the work Duckett had done; they were not required to compensate for an early collapse.
A cushion that mattered
Sri Lanka replied with 331 in 45.1 overs, with Pavan Rathnayake's 118 and Kusal Mendis' 89 demonstrating why England's substantial batting return mattered. England won by 55 runs, despite those major contributions in the chase.
The bowling response and the wider contest were covered in the full match report. Duckett's particular importance lay in how much of England's construction he shared: substantial partnerships with different partners, followed by a platform from which the remaining batters could keep adding.
