United States Cricket Team History
The United States played in the first international cricket match ever staged, against Canada in 1844. After more than a century on the margins, American cricket is growing fast: Major League Cricket launched in 2023, the USA co-hosted the 2024 T20 World Cup and beat Pakistan in a Super Over, and cricket returns to the Olympic programme at Los Angeles in 2028.

1844 and the Long Quiet Century
Cricket was among the most popular sports in nineteenth-century America. The 1844 match against Canada in New York was the first international sporting fixture ever played, and Philadelphia remained a genuine cricketing centre into the early twentieth century, producing the fast bowler Bart King, who was good enough to top the English first-class bowling averages in 1908.
Baseball's rise then pushed cricket to the margins for the best part of a hundred years, and the sport survived mainly within immigrant communities from the Caribbean and South Asia.
The 2024 T20 World Cup: Beating Pakistan in Dallas
The USA co-hosted the 2024 T20 World Cup with the West Indies, and produced the tournament's biggest shock. On 6 June 2024 in Dallas, the USA tied its group match with Pakistan and then won the Super Over, with Saurabh Netravalkar conceding just 13 in the decider.
The USA had already beaten Canada in the opening match and went on to beat Pakistan and reach the Super 8 stage, eliminating Pakistan from the tournament in the process — a result that transformed the profile of cricket in the country.

Major League Cricket and the Olympic Opportunity
Major League Cricket launched in 2023 with six franchises and purpose-built venues, backed by significant investment including from Indian Premier League ownership groups. It has drawn international players to the United States and given American cricketers a professional pathway for the first time.
The largest opportunity is still ahead. Cricket returns to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028 for the first time since 1900, giving the sport a stage in the United States that no amount of league cricket could buy.
