Wankhede Stadium
Wankhede Stadium is a prominent international cricket venue in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Owned and operated by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), it is one of the city's most recognised cricket grounds and frequently hosts international and domestic matches, including fixtures in ICC tournaments and the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Construction and Early Years
Wankhede Stadium was established in 1974 and named after Barrister Sheshrao Krishnarao Wankhede, who was then president of the Bombay Cricket Association. The ground was built near Churchgate in South Mumbai and opened in time to host its first Test match in the 1974–75 season, when India played the West Indies.
Since its inauguration, Wankhede has become one of India's key cricket venues, hosting many international series and memorable matches across formats.
Stadium Structure and Facilities
After renovations ahead of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, the seating capacity of Wankhede Stadium was set at around 33,000 spectators. Renovations included improved seating, facilities for players and media, and upgrades in amenities to enhance the match-day experience for fans.
The stadium's architecture features several stands with steep seating, which helps create a close-to-the-action atmosphere. Short boundaries and a generally batting-friendly pitch have made it known as a ground where favorable performances often occur.
Pitch and Playing Conditions
The pitch at Wankhede is generally considered balanced, offering opportunities for both batsmen and bowlers. It has traditionally supported batting in limited-overs cricket due to true bounce and generally favorable conditions for scoring. Bowlers, especially pacers, can benefit early on from swing due to the ground's proximity to the Arabian Sea.
Memorable Moments
Wankhede Stadium has been the setting for several significant events in cricket history:
- 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup Final: India defeated Sri Lanka to win the World Cup on home soil, a moment remembered for its magnitude and atmosphere.
- Sachin Tendulkar's Final International Match in India: The ground hosted the Indian legend's last home appearance before retirement, adding emotional significance to its legacy.
- Historic Performances: Wankhede has witnessed numerous standout individual and team performances over decades, helping define its role as one of India's premier cricket venues.
In domestic cricket, it is also the home ground of the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, where many high-profile matches have been played.
Role in ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026
Wankhede Stadium is one of the selected venues for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
