Kenya Cricket Team History
Kenya reached the semi-finals of the 2003 Cricket World Cup - still the finest performance by any associate nation in the tournament's history, and one no non-Test country has come close to matching. Seven years earlier Kenya had bowled out the West Indies for 93 in Pune. For a decade either side of 2000, Kenya was the most convincing argument that cricket could grow beyond its traditional borders.

1996: Bowling Out the West Indies for 93
On 29 February 1996 in Pune, Kenya beat the West Indies by 73 runs in one of the great World Cup upsets. Kenya were bowled out for 166, a total that looked far too small — and then dismissed a West Indies side containing Brian Lara and Richie Richardson for just 93.
The image of Kenyan players celebrating on the outfield became one of the defining pictures of the tournament and put East African cricket on the map.
2003: The Semi-Final Run That Has Never Been Matched
Kenya co-hosted the 2003 World Cup and produced the greatest campaign by an associate nation in the tournament's history. Kenya beat Sri Lanka in Nairobi, then Bangladesh, then Zimbabwe and Canada in the Super Six stage, and reached the semi-finals.
Kenya's run was assisted by New Zealand forfeiting its fixture in Nairobi over security concerns, but the victories over Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe were achieved on merit. India beat Kenya in the semi-final in Durban. No associate nation has reached the last four of a World Cup before or since.

Steve Tikolo and Kenya's Leading Players
Steve Tikolo is widely regarded as the finest batter produced by an associate nation, a player good enough for Test cricket who never had the opportunity to play it. Alongside him, Maurice Odumbe was named Player of the Match in the 1996 win over the West Indies, Thomas Odoyo led the bowling for over a decade, and Collins Obuya took 5/24 against Sri Lanka in 2003.
Kenya has since fallen away from the top level of associate cricket, losing its ODI status in 2014. The 2003 achievement remains the benchmark that every associate side measures itself against.
