1844: The First International Sporting Fixture
On 24 and 25 September 1844, Canada played the United States at the St George's Cricket Club ground in New York. Canada won by 23 runs. The fixture predates the first Test match by 33 years and the first modern Olympic Games by 52, and is recognised as the oldest international sporting contest of any kind.
The rivalry, now known as the Auty Cup, has been contested intermittently ever since, making it the longest-running international fixture in world sport.
World Cups and John Davison's Record
Canada first reached the World Cup in 1979 and returned in 2003, 2007 and 2011. Its defining individual moment came at the 2003 tournament in South Africa, when John Davison scored a century from 67 balls against the West Indies in Centurion — at the time the fastest hundred in World Cup history.
Canada also recorded a World Cup victory over Bangladesh in 2003 and over Kenya in 2011, and has since appeared at the T20 World Cup in 2024 as the game grows across North America.
